Platelet-Rich Plasma, or PRP, is a medical procedure that uses a person’s own blood to support the body’s natural repair and regeneration processes. The treatment concentrates platelets — cells that contain growth factors and bioactive proteins which play a role in tissue recovery.
In aesthetic medicine, PRP may assist in improving overall skin quality and in supporting scalp health for suitable individuals experiencing certain types of hair thinning.
How PRP is Performed | A small blood sample is drawn and processed in a medical-grade centrifuge to separate platelets from other components. The concentrated platelet-rich layer is then re-introduced into targeted skin or scalp areas using fine, sterile needles. Before treatment, the area is prepared and numbed with a topical anaesthetic cream for comfort. The procedure usually takes 45–60 minutes depending on the treatment area. All PRP treatments at The Skin Doctors Clinic are performed by trained members of our clinical team under the supervision of Dr Jimmy Wang, Cosmetic Physician. |
Intended Use and Expected Outcomes | PRP aims to stimulate the body’s natural healing responses in the treated area. This process may support improvements in skin texture, tone and firmness, or maintain healthy hair growth where follicles remain active. Individual results vary. Factors such as age, general health, baseline skin or scalp condition and adherence to after-care can influence response. A course of sessions spaced about four to six weeks apart is often recommended, with maintenance as advised by your clinician. Outcomes cannot be guaranteed and may differ between patients. |
Recovery and Possible Side Effects | Because PRP involves injections, temporary redness, swelling, tenderness or mild bruising may occur and generally resolve within several days. Less common risks include infection, prolonged swelling or pigment change. Your clinician will discuss these potential effects in detail and provide after-care instructions. Most patients resume normal activities shortly after treatment, though strenuous exercise, alcohol and active skincare are best avoided for 24 hours. |
Is PRP Right for You? | PRP is not suitable for everyone. Suitability depends on medical history, medications and treatment goals. During your consultation, a clinician will assess your condition and explain the possible benefits, limitations and risks so you can make an informed decision. |
